The Antigua Guatemala was the Spanish colonial capital of Central America. It is a world heritage site and is perhaps the most popular in Guatemala tourist destination. Now commonly as just Antigua (old), city was one of the great colonial capitals of the Spanish Empire in America since the 16th century to the 18th century. The 20th century saw increased appreciation for the large number of preserved Spanish colonial architecture here, development to visitors of and the city was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1979. The city features landmarks which is much visited, such as monuments, fountains and historic buildings. This city was founded by the Spanish in the 17TH century, and follows the traditional design of a main square surrounded by buildings of the Government and the Catholic Church. Its worth visiting are the Cathedral, the Palace of the Governors, Capuchin Convent, Convento de Santa Clara, the Arco de Santa Catarina, La Merced Church and the handicraft market.
